San Marino may participate in large-scale energy projects implemented by Azerbaijan, the statement was made at the meeting of Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov and Secretary of State of San Marino for Foreign and Political Affairs Pasquale Valentini, who is on a visit to Baku, the Azerbaijani foreign ministry said Sept. 8.

The sides stressed the importance of Valentinis visit from the standpoint of developing the bilateral relations.

During the meeting, Mammadyarov and Valentini exchanged the views on the importance of rapprochement of the two countries positions within international organizations.

The agreement on exemption of visa requirements for those having diplomatic and service (official) passports and the convention on avoidance of double taxation were signed following the meeting.

Mammadyarov also informed Valentini about the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
