Azerbaijan and Iran to create working group

On the North-South transport corridor.

On August 3-4, the chairman of "Azerbaijani Railways" CJSC Javid Gurbanov visited Iran with a delegation led by Minister of Economy and Industry, co-chairman of the State Commission on Cooperation between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran in the economic, trade and humanitarian spheres Shahin Mustafayev, the spokesman of "Azerbaijan Railways" Nadir Azmammadov told Oxu.az.

According to him, during the visit, the delegation met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and heads of corresponding structures.

Chairman of JSC Javid Gurbanov held bilateral meetings with the Minister of Roads and Urban Development of Iran Abbas Akhmed Akhundi and Deputy Minister - Director General of the Department of Railways Iran Mohsin Purseid Aghai, got acquainted with the management of traffic in the control center.

The meeting noted the importance of this project for both countries, and it was decided to establish a working group on the railway project "North-South".

It should be noted that the agreement on international transport corridor "North-South" was signed on 12 September 2000 in St. Petersburg between the Russian Federation, the Islamic Republic of Iran and India.

After passing internal procedures in these countries, the agreement came into force on 21 May 2002. In September 2005, our country joined the "Agreement on international transport corridor" North-South".

Railroad "North-South" will connect Northern Europe to South-East Asia.

"Forecasts show that in the case of operation at full capacity, international transport corridor "North-South" will provide outlet for European countries, Russia, Central Asia and the Caucasus to the Persian Gulf and India and it will lead to an intensification of trade relations of the Caspian littoral states with the ports of the Black Sea.

This corridor will increase rail traffic between Europe - South Asia - Middle East, respectively, and revenues of rail transport, both on local and transit", N. Azmammadov said.
