Transiting energy resources through Georgia

Teymuraz Gochitashvili, Strategic Development Adviser, Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation

- This event traditionally takes a very interesting format, with much important information being disseminated by industry leaders. I was especially interested to learn about the research conducted by Exxon Mobil in the South Caucasus region, on the border between Azerbaijan and Georgia. We have studied the potential of this oil-rich territory for both Azerbaijan and Georgia, including the possibility of producing alternative (unconventional) resources such as oil shale.

Very interesting new information about the important TAP and TANAP projects was also discussed. By the way, the CEO for the Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation spoke at the conference, reporting on the prospects of Azerbaijani energy resources transiting through Georgia. Today, three major routes of transportation for oil and gas are connected to Georgia: Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan, Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum and Baku-Supsa, plus there is the prospect of transporting raw materials by rail to the Georgian port of Kulevi. This is not surprising, as transit via Georgia is the most profitable and commercially rational way to transport Azerbaijani oil and gas, compared to other options.
